My daughter arrived at Ibiza Calm in late October 2024 with a ketamin addiction and long-standing issues from an early teenage eating disorder. She willingly volunteered to enter rehab as the ketamin usage was on the point of creating some serious long-term medical problems. Ibiza Calm was recommended to us by a friend and from the very first point of contact they understood my daughter’s challenges and her needs, and the vital emphasis that she was being helped not punished. Obviously, the early weeks were a struggle and there were tearful FaceTimes with her but the staff were always on hand with advice and reassuarance for us as parents. We visited Ibiza Calm after four weeks, as our daughter had elected to stay for a further 14 days because in her words she ‘wasn’t ready to come home’ - an incredible endorsement of just how safe, settled and supported she felt there. The location is beautiful and yes there is a sense of calm, reflected in the fact that everyone seems to operate as one large family - patients, staff, cooks. cleaners, cats and dogs. My daughter was eating well, exercising (!!) and had a serenity that I hadn’t seen in her for a very long time, she even had a tidy bedroom. By the end of six weeks she was ready to come home and left Ibiza Calm with enough discipline, understanding and hope to be able to tackle the next stage of her recovery. And while it hasn’t been easy, I feel that the foundations and belief she has been given have significantly increased her chances of sobriety. Also, a quick shout-out to the Ibiza Calm Support Group for parents and partn...

My time at Ibiza calm was the most meaningful and impactful period of my life. The care that goes into the facility permeated all aspects of my time there. From the lovingly prepared food, the comforting presence of the much loved dog Django, the wonderfully comfortable and cosy rooms so well cared for by the housekeeping staff, the beautiful setting so well tended by the gardener, the incredibly kind support staff and of course the expert care of therapists and medical staff. My time at Ibiza calm set me up for the best possible start to my recovery and I couldn’t be more greatful to each and every person there who made that possible. It’s a place filled with loving and empathetic people, who gently guide you through your battles with humanity and genuine care. I couldn’t recommend it more. Thank you.

Who does addiction affect? - Ibiza Calm

Addiction is a global problem. According to recent figures from the World Health Organization, it is estimated that 296 million people used psychoactive drugs in 2021, 39.5 million people are estimated to be affected by drug use disorders, and the harmful use of alcohol results in 3.3 million deaths every year. In addition to substance use disorders, there are behavioural or process addictions such as gambling, which affects up to 6% of the populace in some countries. Approximately 3% of the world (around 60 million people) are struggling with a gaming disorder (video game addiction). And an estimated 4.9% of the global adult population have a shopping addiction. Addiction truly affects everyone. Its ripple effects extend beyond the individual struggling with it to families, friends, and even communities. Menopause, mental health, substance abuse, and addiction - Ibiza Calm

October is World Menopause Month, with last Friday (18th October) marking World Menopause Awareness Day. The aim this year is to raise awareness of Hormone Replacement therapy (HRT) and to highlight where people can go to get support and discuss options. The menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life, which brings with it a whole host of physical and emotional side effects; but is rarely openly discussed. In our blog we look at the relationship between this change of life and mental health, and how it can have an impact on substance abuse and addiction. Not only are the symptoms often uncomfortable, but they can interfere with day-to-day living and have a serious impact on mental health; and whilst there is no direct link between the biological factors involved in the menopause and addiction, it is a difficult time and many will use, or increase their use of, drugs and alcohol as a method to cope.
