Ms. Rubina Rahman, after qualifying as a doctor, underwent specialist ophthalmology training in Oxford and the South West of England. She specialises in diseases of the retina and completed a two-year fellowship in Vitreo-retinal surgery at the Oxford Eye Hospital.
In September 2002, Ms. Rahman was appointed as a consultant at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust. She has since established a state-of-the-art Vitreo-retinal service from scratch, providing cover to Halifax, Huddersfield, and the surrounding areas. She is among a select group of UK surgeons who use the advanced 27G vitrectomy platform.
Since 2016, Ms. Rahman has been performing 27G procedures in 95% of patients undergoing vitrectomy, significantly enhancing postoperative comfort and expediting visual rehabilitation. She audits her surgical outcomes using a prospectively maintained Vitreo-retinal database.
Throughout her career, Ms. Rahman has held several key positions, including lead clinician, audit lead, and educational supervisor. She is currently the Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust, representing the Hospital Eye Service (HES) on the Eye Care Network. In this role, she collaborates with LOC and GP commissioners to ensure integrated working between primary, community, and secondary care. Additionally, she serves as the Lead for Vitreo-retinal Services at CHFT.
Since 2017, Ms. Rahman has been a Final FRCS Examiner at The Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow. She also reviews mainstream ophthalmology journals, including Eye, Retina, and the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. Her academic contributions include co-authoring 50 abstracts and publishing 35 papers on various topics such as cataract, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and 27G vitrectomy.

This study compared anatomical and functional outcomes of the inverted internal limiting membrane flap (ILMF) technique with complete ILM peeling (ILMP) in nonposturing surgery for large, full-thickness macular holes (MHs). All MHs in both groups closed after surgery (100%). There was a statistically significant improvement of VA in the ILMP group compared with the ILMF group (P = .02). Not posturing after surgery did not compromise surgical success in both groups.

To ascertain whether posterior hyaloid face (PHF) status (attached vs detached) affects the risk of intraoperative retinal breaks and number of operations in patients undergoing vitrectomy for floaters. The analysis has found evidence to link vitreous status with the primary outcome of the presence of a retinal break. Particular care should be taken in, cases with vitreous attached status, to prevent missed breaks and subsequent rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

To evaluate the accuracy of user-adjusted axial length (AL) measured by optical biometry for intraocular lens (IOL) calculations in eyes having combined phacovitrectomy for macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). User-adjusted optical biometry could be used as an alternative method for measuring AL in macula-off RRD with combined phacovitrectomy. However, optical biometry would require assessment of agreement with US AL in cases in which a posterior peak is not easily identifiable. User-adjusted optical biometry might outperform US AL when calculating IOL power; however, a larger study should be performed to confirm this.

The use of gas tamponade, in particular C2F6, does not constitute justification for pre/postoperative antiglaucoma prophylactic treatment. In addition, we postulate that careful consideration should be given to the frequency of laser burns during PPV.
