Miss Maino studied Medicine at University of Bari, Italy, obtaining a first class honours degree in 1998. She then worked as Glaucoma Research Fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London in 1999-2000, before completing specialist training in Manchester (2001-2008). In 2008, she undertook an internationally renowned fellowship in Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital under Mr JP Lee, Miss G Adams and Prof A Moore. She started working as Consultant at Stepping Hill Hospital in 2009 where she has been appointed to develop and lead a specialist Strabismus and Paediatric service. Miss Maino moved to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2016.
Miss Maino is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with extensive expertise in treating adult and paediatric ocular motility problems (double vision, strabismus (squint), abnormal head posture, reading difficulties/dyslexia) with surgical, medical and optical treatments. Miss Maino has also a special interest in diagnosing and treating acquired problems (e.g. caused by thyroid eye disease, direct trauma, road accidents, stroke, cancer treatment) both in the field of eye movement and perception of images.
She has an interest in medical education and research, actively participating to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes as organiser, lecturer and trainer. She is a member of the International committee and of the Educational committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and she is the Lead for New Consultants.
She has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers in international journals. She regularly reviews and presents papers at national and international conferences.
She is a UK Delegate of the European Board of Ophthalmology and she contributes in setting standards for paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus exams with the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), and the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO).
